M. Anne Sweet is a poet and artist. Her poetry collection, Nailed to the Sky, is now out from Gazoobi Tales (available for purchase and sound bite of the poet reading one of her poems at www.gazoobitales.com). She has read extensively throughout the Puget Sound (Washington State) area, individually as well as with The Seattle Five Plus One and The Daughters of Dementia (Irene Drennan, Jo Nelson and Sweet). Her poetry has also appeared in The Seattle Five Plus One: Poetry (Pig Iron Press, 1995), Pocketful of Dreams (by Denise Linn, 1989), Crab Creek Review, The Raven Chronicles, Pontoon, Main Street Rag Poetry Journal, PoetsWest Literary Journal, The Charlotte Poetry Review, Equine Image, etc. Two of her poems were selected for publication as poems of Special Merit in The Comstock Review poetry contest. Her work has also appeared online in Pif Magazine, The Horsethiefs Journal (archived issues #4 and #5), The Green Tricycle (issues #2 and #3) and Switched-on Gutenberg. Her poem for three voices, Overture and Fugue, has been performed by The People's Theatre. In 2003, Sweet won the Bart Baxter Poetry in Performance category for the Washington Poets Association. She is currently working with area percussionists and musicians on interdisciplinary collaborations, known as Project Z, combining poetry with percussion, flutes, shakers, hand-clapping and a variety of world music instruments. In 2005, Sweet was award second place in the Peninsula Writers' Association Short Story and Poetry Contest for her poem entitled "Wrong Place Story." Sweet studied art and art history at the University of New Mexico. She is the editor and art director for Washington Thoroughbred magazine, published by the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association, and has over 30 years experience in the field of graphic design. She also designed and maintains the association's Web site at www.washingtonthoroughbred.com, as well as other sites. She is currently working primarily in digital mixed media, but also is engaged in building a series of rhythmic or pattern based photographs (referred to as "assemblages"), as well as figure drawing in a variety of mediums. She also has a series of limited edition broadsides that combine her poetry and art. Art credits include: In 2003, she was awarded a Purchase Award for "Laundry in Light and Dark" in the City of SeaTac's annual photo competition, a photo from her travel to Cuba earlier that year. Also in 2003, she was awarded the Juror's Award for "Menstrata" at the City of Federal Way Arts Alive show. As a result, she was awarded a one-person show at the Federal Way City Hall, Arts Commission Gallery Exhibit. In October 2004, she had a show of new work, entitled Innocents, at Bud's Jazz Records in Seattle. She maintains a working studio, Studio 68, located at 608 4th Street in Bremerton, Washington, with studio partner Chuck Smart (www.chucksmart.com). In addition, Sweet is a founding member of the board of Musical Experiences, a group dedicated to bringing an understanding of classical music to a broad audience. She was one of the rotating facilitators for the SPLAB! (Northwest SPokenword LAB, www.splab.org) Living Room series and in 2004 co-curated the guest readers for that series. She organized a popular south Puget Sound reading series called Passion for Poetry and is a past member of the board of the Washington Poets Association. Sweet is available for readings and exhibits throughout the Pacific Northwest.
